Obituary of Edward C. Nelson

Funeral services for Mr. Edward C. Nelson, 86, of Lisbon will be held on Friday, November 18, 2016 at 11:30 AM with Reverend Walter Smith officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday, November 17, from 4:00-7:00 PM, and Friday, November 18, from 10:00-11:15 AM, at the Lawrence Funeral Home, 21 Park Street, Canton. Burial will be in Morley Cemetery. Additional off-street parking is available behind “LUNA” 18 Park Street. Ed was born March 10, 1930, a son of the late Miller & Mary (McCormick) Nelson. He was raised on the family farm on the Norway Road and graduated from Lisbon High School. In 1947 he became a partner in the family dairy farm with his father and brother. The family moved to the Morley-Lisbon Road and operated the farm until 2005. On December 23, 1954, Ed married Bethany J. Poor in the Methodist Church in Canton. They were married nearly 62 years, and enjoyed traveling with their children throughout the United States. Ed also enjoyed history, photography, and railroading. Ed was a member of the Morley Volunteer Fire Department for 59 years, and served as chief for 5 years. He was a member of the St. Lawrence County Fire Chiefs, a Life Member of the Northern New York Fireman’s Association, and a member of the NYS Fire Chief’s Association. Ed was a Special Deputy with the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department for 45 years, and an Assistant Scout Master. He also served on the Canton School Board for 10 years. Surviving are his wife, Bethany Nelson, of Lisbon; a daughter, Linda J. Nelson of Amherst; a son, Robert E. Nelson (Cathy) of Oswego; and their children, Travis Nelson, of New York City; and Kayla (Mark) Demski, of Boston, Massachusetts. He was predeceased by two brothers, Alan and Robert. Memorial contributions may be made to the Morley Volunteer Fire Department, the Morley Library, and/or the Episcopal Church (of Morley) renovation project.
