Obituary of Marion B. Smith

Formerly of Canton, NY-- Marion B. Smith, 88, formerly of 7 Harrison Street and Partridge Knoll Retirement Community, in Canton, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2017, in Doylestown, PA surrounded by loving family and friends. Marion relocated to Doylestown in 2015 to be near her daughter and grandchildren. She lived in Lakeview Assisted Living and the Pine Run Health Center there. The family will receive friends on Friday, March 10 from 2-4 & 6-8 PM at the Lawrence Funeral Home, 21 Park Street, Canton. Her funeral will be held on Saturday, March 11 at 11 AM at the Canton United Methodist Church with Rev. Michael H. Terrell officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery. Marion was born December 3, 1928, in Canton, NY, the daughter of the late, Kenneth J. & Esther Baxter Burt. She graduated Canton High School in 1946, and Watertown School of Commerce in 1947. Marion started working for St. Lawrence County in 1950 as a clerk in the Welfare Department and after holding various positions, rose to the position of Accounting Supervisor for the Social Services Department in 1987. She retired on March 4, 1994 after 44 years as a true civil servant to the citizens of St. Lawrence County. On September 20, 1962, she married Samuel P. Smith in Jersey City, NJ. Samuel died September 8, 1970. She was predeceased by sisters, Luella Winters and Elsie Barr and two brothers, K. James and David Burt. Surviving are her loving daughter, Carolyn Wood of Doylestown, PA and St. Louis, MO and the lights of her life; her three grandchildren, Ian, Joshua and Kelsey Wood. Marion was an active member of the Canton United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir for over 65 years and was a member of United Methodist Women’s group. She was a member of Zonta Club, where she served as President in 1994; the Sweet Adelines singing group; a bowling league member at Gray Lanes for over 35 years; and a Holiday of Lights Committee Member for 11 years. Marion will be remembered for her love of music and the joy it brought her, her strong faith, and the unconditional love and support she gave to her family. She was a baseball fan and enjoyed watching the Yankees games. She treasured her many trips to Maryland most of all, to spend time with her three grandchildren.
