I am sorry to learn that Lanse has passed away. He was such a nice man with a wonderful singing voice. Lanse sang with my Dad in the quartet The Adirondack Harmony Co. and I have quite a few nice memories of Lanse, the Quartet and the chorus. Lanse sang Ave Maria at my wedding, also. I like to think that maybe he and my Dad are singing together again. He will be missed. RIP

Lance was truly one of a kind. I had the pleasure of knowing Lance for many years when he was Canton Central, and had the pleasure of calling him a colleague when he was at Gouverneur Central. Lance was a true gentleman and a fine musician. Many times, we ran into each other at Meadows Restaurant where he patronized on a regular basis. His impact upon his students was substantial. I know he will be missed by many people....... I am just so sorry he was taken from all of us so soon.

It is with incredible sadness that I write to you about my love and admiration for my former music and choral teacher. I only wish that I had run into Mr. Laraway in these recent years so that I could have told him in person about his positive affect on me. He encouraged me to have the confidence to sing - "if you are going to make a mistake, make a loud one!" - which has translated to confidence during public speaking in my professional life. Thank you, Mr. Laraway. You are missed.

I am so saddened by the passing of Lanse. He was very kind, talented and generous with his talent. He was my HS chorus teach first and then a friend later who helped me with an audition. My Dad, Harry King, loved having Lanse direct the Goldenaires as it made them so professional, yet fun. Lanse will be missed by for the gifts he had of playing and singing and so willing shared with so many. God's choir has certainly improved now with this angel!

Some folks quietly seep into your life and change it for the better. Sending out my condolences with a heavy heart to all those who love Lance Laraway, our steadfast music teacher. A Christmas never passes that I don' t think of him while singing, " Oh the weather outside is frightful", or hollering out "Hey Parson Brown!"... And anytime I hear The Sound of Music I think of the hours he spent with this 12 year old, with little musical talent, to perfect her singing parts as Gretl. So Long Farewell Mr.Laraway. with your strong, gentle, caring foundation, you invited us to the joy and wonder of the sound of music.

My deepest condolences to Lanse's family and friends. I worked with Lanse in Gouverneur when I was a new teacher, fresh out of college. He became a mentor and friend, kind and generous with his time and wisdom. I couldn't have asked for a better colleague in those challenging first years of my career. I hope he had at least some idea of how great an impact he made on countless students and colleagues. I know he's entertaining the angels with his beautiful voice and wonderful sense of humor.

My thoughts, love and prayers go out to all of the family, friends and students. I had the honor and privilege to learn so much from him during my time at Gouverneur Jr/Sr High from 1994 until 2000. His love and passion for both his music and his students was evident in all that he did. His belief in his students was instrumental to so many, including myself. Thank you Mr. Laraway for giving me and so many others a love of music that will last beyond a lifetime. And thank you for that same love of all things music that I have been able to pass onto my children, who will one day pass onto theirs. The choir in heaven just got that much stronger!!

Lance was my first vocal instructor at Canton high school. I remember his patience and kindness, which was enormous!
I continued on with vocal training through out college and beyond. I now sing with the Syracuse Pops choir, and will be auditioning for the musical, Bye, Bye Birdie soon, which Lance directed while I was still in high school.
He now is heaven with the Lord, and I can't imagine being in a better place. I was so blessed to see him this past Sunday!! Till we meet, again! Sing on!!

As a member of the Canton UMC choir, the loss of Lanse is monumental. No one will ever be able to replace his patience and expertise in directing the choir and choosing the most wonderful music for us to sing. He always took into account that we were not professionals and needed music that suited our talents.
His mastery at the organ was unsurpassed and appreciated by everyone. He made the church come alive every Sunday morning.
No one can replace Lanse. Once that voice was stilled we can only carry him in our hearts and memories.
God speed, Lanse, as you begin your new role as director of the Angel Choir.
With love...Susan Scouten

My heart is heavy to learn about Mr. Laraway's passing. He was my music teacher for 6 years and a friend. I remember he would come to the Roma every week when it was still in our family and we will miss him very much. I went on to pursue a career in music and credit my love and appreciation for choral music from my time learning from him at GHS. I will always remember him fondly and am sad to see him pass. All my love to his family. He will be greatly missed.

You will be sorely missed by our Family. Many memories of you instructing our Daughter Heather and taking her "under your wing" in Gouverneur School. And flying all the way out to West Virginia to watch her Graduate from college. Your dedication to your "students" was unmatched.
