Obituary of James I. Winterbottom

Canton--
James I. Winterbottom, 97, of Spears Street, Canton, died, December 4, 2017, at St. Joseph's Home in Ogdensburg after a brief stay.
His family will receive friends on Friday, December 8, 2017, at Lawrence Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Canton from 2-4 & 6-8 PM.  
Those desiring are asked to make memorial donations to a Veterans Organization of their choice.
Born December 28, 1919, in Johnstown, NY, he was a son of the late, Walter & Lelah (Irving) Winterbottom.  He graduated from Johnstown High School and later from SUNY Cobleskill.
Mr. Winterbottom was a proud WWII Veteran, serving two tours of active duty totaling six-and-a-half years.  The first tour, from 27 May 1942 to 29 November 1945, was with F Company, 85th Mountain Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division, US Army.  The second tour, from 1 July 1949 to 12 June 1952, was with Battery A 170th Field Artillery Battalion, 27th Infantry Division, New York National Guard.
On October 17, 1956, he married Sylvia E. Stamas in Malone, NY.  Sylvia died August 28, 2017.
He retired as a DEC Officer based out of Canton, after many years of service.  He was a member of REACT, Ham Radio Operators during the 70's, VFW Post #1231, Circleville, NY Vounteer Fire Dept., Sheriff's Association of Orange County, FL and St. Lawrence County Citizens Patrol. 
Surviving are his adopted daughters, Holly Rivera of Jim Thorpe, PA and Heather (James) Richardson of Madrid, NY; two grandchildren, Jordana Bresett of Ogdensburg and Nichole Wentz of Jim Thorpe, PA; two great-grandchildren, Savannah Wentz and Roslyn Bresett; as well as, a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a brother Theodore.
Mr. Winterbottom was an all around outdoorsman.  He enjoyed fishing and hunting and he loved to camp.  He also liked to tell his life stories.
