Deat Mrs. Stitt
It is with deep sadness I learned of the death of your husband Wesley. I remember him from my childhood and teen years. After the war my dad would take us from time to time to Morrisburg to visit his brother Doug and I got to know Wes, Bruce and Glenn. Wes and Bruce were great hockey players and I was quite proud to tell my friends that he was my cousin. I remember watching the two of them play in the old rink in Cardinal when they played for the Inkerman Rockets in the mid 50's. It was an exhibition game and the brothers scored most of the goals in a lopsided 12-2 rout of Cardinal. My condolences to you and your family in this dark time.

I know that you know better than any of us that Wes was the best in so many ways to so many people
but there is a need to express it. He made OFA teachers feel respected and supported - they knew they had
a friend in the front office. Wes had a way of making everybody he ran into think that it was the highlight of his
day to see them. What a great example of public service to all of us his life story is!

I am so sorry for your loss. It took me a long to gather my thoughts about Mr. Stitt and all he did for me, my family and so many others in our community. There was oh so much to reflect upon and I am sorry it took so long to reach out to you about his passing. Mr. Stitt was such a positive force not only my life but in all those countless kids who were touched by his dedication to their education and overall betterment. His honesty, dedication, approach-ability and willingness to share his knowledge was such a rare and generous combination. I've never met anyone like him since.
Your household was always such a loving , positive place to have encountered and I feel so very fortunate to have been included in your family gatherings. There was always so much genuine love and inclusiveness shown. I truly look back and cherish the part of my life that you and your family gifted to me. Compassion, hard work and community spirit were the values that your family projected as examples for those who knew you. Laughs, love, good times & understanding were always in such abundance.
Mr. Stitt was the perfect example of "the life well lived". Continually giving back to his community while being a stand out educator his entire life, he touched so many lives and improved life for all those around him. He was loved and respected by so many and will truly be missed. Both Doug and Jenny are such successful and giving people. They are perfect gifts to the world to perpetuate all of the wonderful qualities that he and you shared with the world.

Dear Janet, Back in 1974, I was substituting @ Heuvelton School as well as getting my Master's @ St. Lawrence and had the pleasure to do my internship in counseling w/ Wes. He was amazing w/ those students. I learned so much from him as in who I was as a person and a teacher, and applied these skills throughout my life to better myself. I told Janice last year that I would like to see Wes again to thank him. So now I'm sorry that I did not see him.
God Bless you and your family. Sincerely, Dancy Noble

I was so sorry to learn of Wes’s passing... With thoughts and prayers to all his family and his many friends. My Dad and Wes were hockey teammates and linemates too. When my Dad passed away, I wrote to Wes, introducing myself, telling Wes my Dad had died and asking for any memories of their playing days. Wes wrote back a very thoughtful reply, a reflection of both his kindness and being a true gentlemen. We later met when I visited Appleton and I felt like I already knew him. It was a memorable, wonderful few minutes together. Again, my deepest condolences.

Dear Janet and all of your family,
This is such a sad time for all of you and for us who loved Wes so much. He was a rock for all who were touched by his faith in us, and made such a difference to all of the communities he worked with. Sharing him with us must have been hard, as he was gone a lot from home, helping others, whether it was students, families, high school teachers and staff, or college communities. I know that I thanked him every time i saw him, but it would never be enough.
He went with me to my SLU admissions interview and made me want to give them my best. I learned what a tiny pond HCS was, but that it had prepared me well to take on the challenges both intellectually and socially. Being a farm girl in that culture was a bit overwhelming, but I made lots of friends, found my husband of 50 years+, and it set me on paths I never would have imagined.
I saw Wes several times in the years since I left the North Country, usually in grocery stores with my mom when I came home to visit. He would ask what I was up to, and gave me little problems to solve, like using computers in high school and working with kids with disabilities. I retired 9 years ago after teaching high school, junior high, and college English, working with over 1000 students with disabilities each year at Buffalo State College, winning the President's Award, starting state and national programs for training and advocacy for those groups, and running a multi-million dollar federal education grant that led to awards from the U.S. Department of Education. I nearly finished my Ph.D. at SUNY University at Buffalo. All of it was due to his faith in me. I never doubted the possibility that I would succeed.
I treasured him like a favorite uncle, and loved both of you enough to ask you to our wedding. We still have the handmade walnut salad bowl set you gave us!
Our love and prayers to you.
Many hugs,
Marianne Richardson Savino and Paul Savino

Dear Janet and Family,
I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your beloved husband, father, and friend. Wes was such a great man; I don't even know where to begin. He always had a smile on his face that was infectious and would light up the room. He always had a story to tell - and everyone wanted to listen to him. He was so well-liked and respected and he did so much for his family and friends and for the community, as well.
His involvement with the schools was not only professional - he was also a friend to the students and faculty and I can only imagine how many lives he changed with his love and support. His legacy will live on, not only through his children and his family, but with all that he did for the community. This is a huge loss to all of you, his loved ones and his friends, but also, for all of the great organizations that were fortunate enough to have him on their side - helping them to bring awareness to their cause and raise money to further their mission.
I could go on and on about all of Wes' great accomplishments - however, we all know about them.
Janet, I am thinking of you and your family at this difficult time. I have been thinking about you a lot lately and I miss our wonderful chats. Sending you a hug, positive energy to help ease your pain, if only a little, and praying for all of you. Wes is at peace now and he will be with you always.

My sincere condolences to you at this very difficult time. Wes was an amazing man. During my days as a student at HCS, he was my guidance counselor. He had a profound influence on me and gave me firm but friendly guidance when I needed it. And I often needed it! In later years, Wes always looked for me at any community functions and would ask, with much humor and warmth, how I was doing and if I was ever going to find a real career! I hope it provides some comfort in knowing he had a similar positive effect on many, many people in the North Country.

Kathleen and I are so sorry to hear about Wes. He was a mentor.... like an older brother to me. He encouraged Kathleen, as he had many others to restart her career once our children entered school. In addition, she remembers a tear-filled phone call with Wes, when he talked her into persisting with her studies. Despite a crisis which unexpectedly became what seemed like the end of her education there.
Wes never stopped. He never stopped being a leader, motivator, initiator, or counselor. Actually, as I think about it, he never stopped, period!
He was always on the run.
He was very proud of his family, and had every right to be. Janet, you and Wes raised two wonderful children, and had a wonderful and loving marriage. Your generosity toward the Kelly family will always be fondly remembered.

Janet , Doug , Jenny , there simply are no words to describe the depth of our sadness to learn of this . Wes was a completely irreplaceable force for good and his spirit lives in each of you as reflections of his innate goodness. Long may that spirit burn brightly .
The North Country has lost an Icon ! This man through his hard work , dedication and rich example provided the spark for many to achieve their full potential . An educator's educator , a tireless and seemingly percursor for the Energizer Bunny , this man was a role model for many in the field.
I vividly remember the zest he shared with me in the early seventies when we initiated " The college in the high school program " between SUNY Canton and Heuvelon ,. Many thought this couldn't be done , but they had no idea what a force Wes was . What a joy it was to work with this kind of enthusiasm and help kids leverage their potential and get into some great colleges with a semester of college credit under their belt .
Then when Wes lead OFA our own children benefitted , from his aura , his friendship and infectious " can do" attitude .
This man was truly one of the Lord's finest creations , a caring ,dedicated bundle of energy that made everyone's life better for having known him
RIP Old friend , you are still the best and iwe will miss you .

Dear Mrs. Stitt and family:
If there ever was a man of honor and caring it can be found in Mr. Stitt. I remember well the times I had sitting with Mr. Still in his office and in the halls of Heuvelton Central. He always had time to talk with and guide any student or person who asked for his help. Every member of the Heuvelton community was richer for knowing and learning from Mr. Still. I know that I learned how to be true to myself because of his guidance and caring. I will remember his care and concerns for everyone he came into contact with and will take away the knowledge that he taught each and every one of us that you can be the best ever if you just believe in yourself. Thank you so much Mr. Stitt.
