Virginia V. “Ginny” Witherhead, 83, of Mildon Road, Canton, died Monday, June 9, 2014 at United Helpers Maplewood Campus, Canton, where she had been a resident since March 2013. She was the wife of the late John M. Witherhead, whom she married on June 14, 1952 at the First Presbyterian Church of Canton. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 14 at 1:00 PM at the Lawrence Funeral Home, Canton with Assoc. Pastor Donna Doig officiating, The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 10:00 am until 12:45 PM. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Canton. Ginny was born August 28, 1930 in Stamford, CT, a daughter of the late Frank and Alice (Mechaley) Van Iderstyne. She graduated from Canton Central School in 1949 and from St. Lawrence University in 1952, where she was a member of Tri Delta Sorority. She is survived by a son, David Witherhead & Laurie Poor of Canton; a daughter, Elizabeth & Derrick Terry of Waterloo, NY; a brother, Douglas & Kathy Van Iderstyne; six grandchildren, Jessica Witherhead of Waddington, Kathleen Witherhead of Birmingham, AL, Michael Witherhead of Canton, Allison Witherhead of Canton, Jonathan Witherhead of Sodus and Ryan Bayer of Sodus; three great-grandchildren and a niece Sandy & Ronnie Burns of Canton. Ginny worked for St. Lawrence University Student Affairs and later at the St. Lawrence County Department of Social Services until 1964. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Canton where she was involved with the Post Script Club and was Chair person for the Edna Erickson Flower Fund for many years. She had also been a member of the Canton Garden Club and Den Mother with Boy Scouts Pack 54. Ginny enjoyed gardening, making flower arrangements and collecting tea cups and silver spoons. She was also fond of time spent on the St. Lawrence River and Trout Lake, where she canoed as a teenager, baking cookies and spending precious time with her family.
