Obituary of Jane N Hurlbut
Canton—
Jane N. Hurlbut, 96, of the Canton-Pyrites Road, died Tuesday, January 29, 2019 at Maplewood Campus.
Her funeral will be held on Saturday, February 2nd at 10:30 am at First Baptist Church, Canton with Pastor Fred Sykes officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday, February 1st from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at Lawrence Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Canton.
Burial will be in Brick Chapel Cemetery in the spring.
Jane was born September 1, 1922, in Ogdensburg, NY, the daughter of the late Everett & Vera (Chambers) Nelson. She was a graduate of Ogdensburg Free Academy and Ogdensburg Business School.
On April 16, 1941 she married the late Glenn Willard Hurlbut. The couple was married 68 years and raised three children on the farm.
Jane was retired from St. Lawrence County, where she was employed as a secretary for the county clerk. Previously she worked as a secretary for the Town of Canton Supervisor, Harley Bennett.
Surviving are her three children and spouses: John (Eva) Hurlbut of Fort Plain, NY, Arthur (Diane) Hurlbut of Canton and Carol (Tracy) Sheesley of Canton; seven grandchildren: Sue Smith, Glenn Hurlbut, Christine Sheesley Rozler, Timothy Sheesley, Andy Hurlbut, David Hurlbut and Kimberly Trombly; twelve great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by a sister, Susan Chaloe.
Jane was a member of the First Baptist Church, Canton, Eastern Stars, 4-H Leader and started Little River 4-H Club. She also belonged to a bowling league at Gray Lanes, the Grange and Skirts & Flirts Square Dancing Club.
Jane enjoyed baking bread and pies, cooking meals, making numerous quilts for the whole family, knitting mittens, as well as, caring for her large vegetable and flower gardens. She had three Siamese cats named “Pippi” and also enjoyed watching and feeding the birds and doing crossword puzzles.
