Obituary of Elizabeth B Hawley

Elizabeth Hawley, 90, of Pierrepont passed away peacefully with family at her bedside Monday night April 8, 2019 at Canton-Potsdam Hospital.

Elizabeth was born on April 25, 1928 one of six children of the late George and Lucy (Trumble) Remington of Parishville, New York. Elizabeth graduated from Parishville-Hopkinton Central School and continued on to graduate from the Adirondack School of Commerce, 1947, Malone New York.

Elizabeth was a dedicated Mother and homemaker, but also worked outside of the home starting with the St. Lawrence Creamery in Potsdam, New York. She continued on to other jobs with the First National Bank of Canton, Credit Union on the Potsdam College Campus, and the Sears and Bon Ton stores at the St. Lawrence Centre Mall in Massena.  

Elizabeth served with the Zion Episcopal Church of Colton teaching Church School, she was secretary with the St. Lawrence Figure Skating Club, she took over her husband’s position on the Colton-Pierrepont Central School Board after his passing. Elizabeth loved planting and caring for her rose and vegetable gardens. She also painted oils that depicted countryside and ocean views. Elizabeth’s other interests included interior design, cooking and baking her famous pies, watching and defending wildlife, figure skating, dancing the polka, music, and most of all spending time and caring for her family.

Elizabeth married Carrol O. Brown in 1950 with whom she had two children Brad and Alicia. Carrol  passed away in August 1978, and Elizabeth remarried June 10, 2000 to Jean P. Hawley. Jean passed away in November 2006.

Surviving are her son, Brad Brown of Pie Town, New Mexico; Alicia and her husband Michael Walter of Hopkinton New York; three grandchildren, Lauren and her husband John Hitzeman of Hamden, Connecticut;  Daniel Brown of Dallas, Texas and Tiffany Brown of Austin, Texas; two sisters-in-law, June Remington and Resa Remington of Parishville, and a number of nieces and nephews. 

Elizabeth was predeceased by her siblings Belva Hawley, Warren, Doyle, Carl and John Remington. 

Elizabeth’s funeral will be held on Saturday, April 13 at 2:15 PM at Lawrence Funeral Home and Cremation Services at 21 Park Street, Canton with John Frary officiating. The family will receive friends and family on Saturday from noon to 2 PM at the funeral home. Burial will be at Hillcrest Cemetery immediately following in Parishville.  

Memorial contributions can be made in her name to the Center for Cancer Care, 50 Leroy Street, Potsdam, New York, 13676 or to the Potsdam Humane Society 17 Madrid Avenue, Potsdam, New York, 13676.
