Obituary of Lindon E. Smith

Lindon E. (Billy) Smith, 88, of Canton, NY died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, May 12, 2015. Calling hours for Mr. Smith will be held at Lawrence Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Canton on Thursday, May 14 from 2-4 and from 6-8. A Private Memorial Service for family and friends will be held on Friday, May 15 at 11 AM at the funeral home.
Mr. Smith was born on April 19, 1927 in Canton, NY. He attended Canton schools, graduating from Canton High School in 1944. While in school he managed all the sports teams. Bill attended Clarkson University, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering in just three years in 1947. He married Frances E. Brown in 1950. He is survived by his 5 children, Linda McKeown of Ithaca, NY, Lindon (Billy) Smith of Canastota, NY, Rebecca Martusewicz of Ypsilanti, MI, Jeffrey Smith of Helena, MT, and Christopher Smith of Canton, NY; 6 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren who affectionately referred to him as “GG”.
Mr. Smith was part owner and operator of Billy’s Restaurant and Bar which was named after him. He and his wife, Fran also owned a mink farm in the early 50’s. He worked as a Superintendent of Construction for Fisher-Rexford Construction until 1976. He also worked for Clarkson University as Superintendent of Maintenance and Operations from 1977 to 1985. He was a member of the Carpenters Union and named the North Country Builders Exchange Craftsman of the Year twice.
He was a longtime member of Rainbow Rod and Gun Club and a season ticket holder for Clarkson Hockey for over 60 years. Bill was also a member of the Canton Lions for many years.
Bill and Fran loved to travel. The family traveled and camped all over the United States. Bill and Fran camped and traveled for over 20 years after he retired from Clarkson. They especially loved Alaska, Tomoka State Park in Ormond Beach, Florida and all the National Parks.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley.
