Obituary of Constance A. Nelson

CANTON--- Constance Anne Nelson, 78, passed away on May 28, 2015, at Maplewood Campus, Canton, NY. She was born on May 23, 1937, in Phoenixville, PA, the daughter of James and Anna Moore. She graduated from Phoenixville High School and received a BA from SUNY Potsdam in 1980. Following graduation she was employed by St. Lawrence NYSARC in Hermon, NY, and was a case coordinator for North Country Transitional Living Services, Inc., in Gouverneur, NY. She received a Master of Education in Counseling and Human Development from St. Lawrence University in 1984, and subsequently was employed as a Coordinator by the Canton Enriched Housing Program, Canton. NY. She also had a private counseling business. In 1989, following receiving a Teacher Certification in Counseling, she became employed as a Home School Coordinator with the Canton Central School, and continued in this employment until her retirement in1999. She is survived by her husband, David S. Nelson of Canton, NY, her daughter, Karen E. Nelson Hunter and her husband, Jack, of Phoenix, AZ, and her son Gregory D. Nelson and his wife, Joanne, of West Simsbury, CT. She is also survived by four grandchildren, David, Grace and Daniel Nelson, and Layton Hunter. Also surviving is her sister-in-law, Nancy A. Stetson, two nieces, Christine and Suzanne Stetson, and a cousin, Robert Ryan. Connie was an avid piano player for her entire life and also played the organ and the guitar. She was a long time choir member at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Canton, NY, and sang many years with the St. Lawrence University Chorus. She also loved spending time with her grandchildren and gardening. She was a regular volunteer with the Church and Community Program of Canton, NY. In 1985 she was a recipient of one of the President's Awards for Community Service and Professional Achievement given by the League of Women Voters of St. Lawrence County. A memorial service will be held at 11 am on June 13, 2015, at the Unitarian Universalist Church, East Main Street, Canton, NY. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Unitarian Universalist Church of Canton, NY, the Church and Community Program, 7 Main St, Canton, NY, or the Alzheimer's Assn, Central New York Chapter, Syracuse, NY.
