My great aunt Ilene was a wonderful example of how warm and loving family can be. I always saw her once or twice a year, in trips to Brantingham or over holidays, and she always greeted us with endless love, affection, and generous cheek pinching (and to be fair, I had huge cheeks, so I can't blame her). She was a wonderful human being, and the kind of person everyone needs in their life.

The passing of Aunt I is another passing of what was a wonderful childhood that she and my Aunt Bette and Uncle Bob and Aunt Sheila and my Mom (Una) all strove to build for all of the Thompson grandchildren. Our holidays and family events were the absolute best - Christmas in Lisbon as little ones, then the Gannons as we got older, summers at Brantingham. Aunt Ilene was kind and giving and loving. She had a fantastic sense of humor and loved to laugh. I remember that when she would arrive at my Grandparents home in Lisbon her trademark was to get out of the car and touch her toe to her hand - very limber that girl! She was the coordinator for my wedding in Lisbon and a gracious host to our guests. The Thompson family is known for their hearts, graciousness and sense of humor - and Aunt Ilene definately held all of those attributes. Rest in peace, Aunt I, and give a hug to Dad, Susan, Aunt Bette, Uncle John and Gramma and Grandpa and Uncle Charlie.

I was very saddened to hear of the passing of my dear Aunt Ilene. My last visit with her occurred in the summer of 2017 at her home where I babysat Charlie when I was ten years old. I have to confess I hated watching Captain Kangaroo! Sesame Street not so bad! I was grateful to be with my cousin Charlie as the job provided a safe and stable place to spend my summer days.
Aunt Ilene was an inspiration to me. She was a friendly, positive, capable, loving and gracious lady whose memory will forever be close to my heart. Her Christmas card was always one of the first to arrive each year. She lovingly and proudly shared news of Helen and Charlie and her very adored grandchildren and great grandchildren. And of course news about Una, Bob and Sheila was included too. I loved visiting the family farm in Lisbon as a young girl.
Thinking of all of you as you go through the process of your loss. May happy memories soon take over. Love, Ellen

Bob, Sheila and Chuck; Please accept our condolences in the passing of Ilene. I will always remember her smile and good word as I do your parents and grandparents Marion and Raymond. My parents and grand parents thought an awful lot of her and the whole family. GOD Bless.

Charlie, Helen, Bob, Una, and families,
I first met Ilene, Charlie, and Charlie (then “Chuckie”) in 1956 as a student at St. Lawrence University. We became good friends during my time in Canton and over the ensuing years after my 1960 graduation we have remained in contact each year. I visited them in 1963 and then we lost Charlie in 1965 while I was stationed in Antarctica. Ilene and young Charlie visited our family in Newport, RI when Charlie was a young teenager. Over the ensuing years we remained in contact each year at Christmas sharing the experiences of both our lives. My wife Pam and I were fortunate to visit with Ilene and her sisters Bette and Una in July 2010 on our visit to Canton. I will always remember Ilene as a very good friend and a real “classy lady”. May she forever rest in peace as she reunites with Charlie again. And may all of you share in great and wonderful memories of Ilene.

Una, Charlie, Bob and families:
Words cannot express the sadness I have currently have upon hearing of the passing of my neighbor and dear friend Ilene, this morning. It would have been 22 years next week that we became friends/neighbors. I will never forget her tenacity and sheer sense of independence. Thank you for sharing Ilene with all of us here in Canton. Rest in Peace my dear friend.
