To Mary & Family, We are saddened to learn of Curtis's demise. We knew him well at GTS, and he was always an icon of goodness and character. Mary, Do you remember the card games we used to play. And Curtis would try to "smoke the old witch out." May he rest in peace! And may the God of All Comfort & Mercy shower you with comfort and mercy.

We are so sorry for your loss, and wish to say that knowing Fr. Denney was an honor. He was a true friend and mentor, and will be sadly missed by all. The Lord has gained an Angel, and we who are left behind can share our memories of a truly Christ filled man. May you find comfort in knowing that he now dwells within the house of our Lord.

Dear Mary, Pam, Stephanie, family & Friends,
C.S. Lewis wrote in his personal journal after the loss of his wife to cancer, “I never knew grief felt so much like fear.” Your grief as well as the grief of those who loved Fr. Curtis must feel something like fear. I know it does for me. The most difficult thing about leaving the North Country three years ago was how much our family missed the people. Your father was truly the person I missed the most. I miss his wit, his humor, his pastoral insights and the way he licked his lips whenever I brought the good ‘medicinal’ Scotch. He gave me so much good advice and more importantly a listening ear when I needed to talk about how my pastoral life was going. On Fridays I would spend about an hour playing cribbage with him and as he always quipped, ‘Jumped into manure and came out smelling like rose pedals.’ Yes I tended to win a bit more than he, be let’s be honest I was more physically able to cheat.
Curtis shared with me his many adventures over the years including the Navy, Cooperstown, Mechanicsville, Canton, the Psych Center, and Morristown. Each of those places had special meaning to him but did also contain a few things about which he did grumble. I could not believe that the gift of tickets to a Syracuse Basketball game was the first time he had seen in person his beloved Orangemen in person. Boy did he love the Yankees, but I am guessing even if they swept the World Series he would find something to grumble about in how they played. Nothing but perfection was acceptable for the Yankees. Yet for me and so many others, his grace abounded and his encouragement was always most welcome. As an aside and though he may not know it, I believe he has created a Yankees fan out of my son Ziggy.
As your family gathers together for Curtis’ memorial service in Canton on Saturday, I will be with you in Spirit and will be praying for all of you and especially for Mary. I and my wife Amee do very much miss our friend. Finally I want each of you to know that it was not just the good that God did in and through Curtis which is Curtis’ legacy in so many people and churches. Anything God accomplishes through me will be due in no small part to the impact your father, your husband has been to me. He was and still is a guide, a spiritual director, a friend, a colleague, a father, a husband and an amazing man.
With love and abounding gratitude,
Rev. Rob Longbottom

So happy that I was able to top and spend a few special moments with Stet on Sat PM. I only have good memories of time spent with Stet and Mary during the time we lived in Canton and his sense of humor will be remembered. Special times with special people in our past lives will live forever. Love to all of you - Bev Skinner
