Canton- Susan E. Ward, 69, of Farmer Street, Canton, died Friday, December 11, 2015 at her home while under the care of her husband and Hospice & Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley. A memorial service, to be announced, will be held in the spring. Susan was born June 4, 1946 in Englewood, NJ. She was the daughter of the late George B. & Margaret Pauline “Violet” Goerner Ward. She was a graduate of Fort Lee High School and furthered her education with a degree from Carnegie-Mellon and received her PhD in English from the University of Connecticut. Professor of English Susan Ward joined the St. Lawrence University faculty in 1975. She taught American literature, Native American fiction, women writers, creative non-fiction and journalism. Dr. Ward initiated the internship program with University Communications and on the London Semester Programme. She served for many years as the advisor to the Hill News, and served on the Professional Standards, Health Careers committees, and the Multifield Major committee, and coordinated Native American Studies and the Akwesasne-St. Lawrence University Higher Education Project. Dr. Ward had a Fulbright grant in Germany and directed St. Lawrence’s program in London. Editor of Dear Home: The 1901 and 1902 Diaries of Mabel Lila Wait, about a woman who ran her family’s farm near Canton in the early 20th century, she is the author of numerous articles on Jack London and American women writers. She has lectured on women's diaries and Amish quilts at libraries and historical societies throughout New York State. She retired in 2009. She is survived by her husband, David E. Hornung of Canton; a brother, Robert T. Ward of Leonia, NJ; and an Aunt & Uncle Nongi & Chuck Nazzaro of Toms River, NJ. She is also survived by Dick Goerner and Nancy Devries, both of Green Pond, NJ. Susan was also an avid quilter and belonged to a number of quilting guilds in St. Lawrence County.
