Obituary of Paul Louis Mathews
Morley, NY-
Paul Louis Mathews, 84, of Morley-Potsdam Road, passed away unexpectedly from a short battle with cancer at his home on Wednesday, October 18, 2023.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, October 24 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Lawrence Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 21 Park Street, Canton. His Memorial Service will begin at 1:00 PM on Tuesday at the funeral home with Pastor Richard Ladouceur officiating. Inurnment will follow in Morley Cemetery.
Paul was born February 25, 1939 in Ogdensburg, NY and was a son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Longley) Mathews. He attended St. Peter’s Catholic School in Ogdensburg.
On April 9, 1960 he married his beloved Carol Patricia Whelly in Notre Dame Church, Ogdensburg. The couple raised four children and were married 63 ½ years.
In his younger years Paul worked on “The Seaway” during its construction and for General Electric in Syracuse. He then became a self-made man, doing a variety of jobs like driving taxi, delivering the Watertown Times newspaper, making maple syrup, selling pumpkins as well as having a trash route and doing home repairs.
He is survived by his wife Carol of Morley; four children Paul (Sonja Nelson) Mathews, II , Scott (Margaret) Mathews, Colleen (Calvin) Rose, and Amber (Robert) Wright; three grandchildren Bradley Mathews, Chantel (Christopher) Beebie and Colin Cota; and two great-grandchildren Carsyn and Camdyn Beebie. He is also survived by his four sisters and brothers Elizabeth “Betty” Bateman, Harold Mathews, Lawrence (Sue) Mathews and Laura Mathews; as well as, a number of nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sister Elaine Ormsbee Kalal.
Paul was a member of the Horseshoe Club at the Canton Sportsman’s Club, Northern Poultry Association where he showed Old English birds, he also showed registered goats and raced a team of husky sled-dogs. He also raced Go-Karts with his grandson, owned a hobby farm where he and Carol raised cows, pigs, turkeys, etc…. and had a vegetable garden.
