Frederick “Fred” John Backus, 68 of Boyd Pond/ Russell died Wednesday, April 10, 2024 at his home.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, April17 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Lawrence Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Canton.  Additional off-street parking is available behind “LUNA” at 18 Park Street.  Graveside services will be held privately in Hermon Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to: Canton Pee-Wee Association, P.O. Box 523, Canton, NY 13617.  Checks only please.

Fred was born May 25, 1955 in Russell, NY a son of the late Frederick E. and Patricia M. (Gengler) Backus.  He graduated Knox Memorial in 1973 where he was a drum major and played basketball.  After graduation he started his 27 year career with Newton Falls Paper Mill, retiring in 2000.

Surviving are his three children Doug (Becky) Backus of Camden, DE, Derek “Woody” (Caitlin) Backus of Morley and Kristin (Angela) Backus of Massena; five grandchildren Donald, Jaylee, Joey, Alivia and Avery; a brother Lawrence (Beverly) Backus of Oswego; a sister Wanda Lee of DeKalb Junction; and a sister-in-law Coral Backus of Wolfforth, TX.

He was predeceased by a brother Richard Backus.

Fred was a member of Canton Fire Department where he served as Chief and Assistant Chief.

He was proud of his home on Boyd Pond which he built with the help of his family.  Fred was an avid hunter, fan of New York Rangers Hockey and enjoyed splitting firewood.  He especially enjoyed precious time spent with his grandchildren.
