Obituary of Robert James Mattice
Canton—
Robert James Mattice, 81, of Spears Street, Canton, died Monday, January 28, 2019, at Maplewood Campus.
His funeral service will be held on Monday, February 4th at 11:00 AM in the Grace Episcopal Church, Canton with Rev. Chuck Smith as celebrant.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, February 2nd from 2:00 to 5:00 PM at Lawrence Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Canton.
Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Canton.
Robert was born November 15, 1937, in Potsdam, NY, the son of the late, James & Dorothy (Rogers) Mattice. He graduated High School in 1955 and from Canton A.T.I. in 1957and R.I.T. in 1966. He furthered his education at Clarkson University, where he earned his Master’s degree.
He was a Navy veteran, serving as a mine sweeper from 1961 to 1966.
On August 27, 1966, he married, Linda J. Page in the St. John’s Episcopal Church in Massena.
Robert retired (2000) from SUNY Canton as Professor of Engineering Technology, a career that spanned 30 years. During high school and college, he worked for his father at the Texaco Gas Station in Massena. He later worked in the construction of the Seaway and then for GM for three years in Massena.
Surviving are his wife, Linda of Canton, two children, Kelly (Tom) Finnerty and James (Shannon) Mattice, of Canton; five grandchildren, Jacob & Carly Mattice and Jack, Molly & Elizabeth Finnerty; and a brother, Donald (Sue) Mattice of Winthrop, ME. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
Robert was a member of Society of Manufacturing Engineers. He enjoyed bowling and had bowled a “299”. He also loved his dogs but he especially appreciated precious time watching his grandkids play sports.
