Obituary of Michael James Cunningham

A Memorial Prayer Service will be held at 2 pm on Thursday July 13, 2023 at the Lawrence Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 21 Park Street, Canton, New York for Michael J. Cunningham, 62 who passed away unexpectedly at his home on July 3.  Deacon Jim Snell will officiate.

Additional off-street parking is available behind “LUNA” at 18 Park Street.

Mike was born in Canton, New York on December 19, 1960 to James and Marion (Haney) Cunningham.  He graduated from Hugh C Williams High School in 1978 and Syracuse University in 1982 with a BS in Marketing and Management Information Services.  He worked for the Kmart Corporation in New Jersey from 1982-1986 and was the General Manager of Rickel Home Centers in New Jersey from 1987-1992.

Mike returned to the North Country in 1992 and sold Real Estate for a short time before beginning a career with St. Lawrence County that would span 28 years.  He started as an Assistant Purchasing Agent for the county and held several positions there before ultimately retiring as Director of Governmental Services in 2021.

Mike was predeceased by his parents, his sister Debbie and multiple aunts and uncles, including his uncle Paul Cunningham with whom he was very close.  Mike is survived by his aunt Shirley (Jerry) Hourihan, a brother-in-law Chris Smith as well as many cousins, co-workers and friends.
