Obituary of Lawrence Gene Aldous

 Lawrence G Aldous, 91, of Canton,  went peacefully into the Lord's arms on Wednesday, June 12th 2024 at Claxon-Hepburn Hospital after a lingering illness. His last hours were spent with Shirley  (Chapin) his wife of 64 years, sons David Aldous and Daniel (Liza) Aldous of Canton, granddaughter  Lyndsey Aldous of Willsboro, and daughter Debra Prince with her husband Bobby, of Franklin, North Carolina.

“Larry”, as he was known, was born September 20th 1932 in Canton to the late Lura (Smith) and Edson Aldous.  He was predeceased by his sister Melbetra (Edgar) Bradberry, sister-in-law, Eleanor Aldous, and daughter-in-law Felicia McGregor. Surviving family includes brothers, Thomas Aldous and Robert (Gail) Aldous of Canton, many nieces and nephews, 4 granddaughters  Heather (Michael)Fulcher of Maine, Kassi ( Wayne) Aldous-Smith and Kira (Brad) Rafter both of California, and 7 great-grandchildren.

Lawrence was born and raised on the family Dairy farm, attended the former Pink schoolhouse and graduated from Canton High school in 1950. He completed his freshman year at Canton ATC in 1951 but returned to the family farm upon the death of his father. In 1955, when his brother, Thomas graduated high school and assumed management of the farm, Lawrence returned to ATC and graduated in 1956 with a degree in Agricultural Engineering. He became employed with Robinson's farm equipment until he entered the artificial insemination training course at Cornell University in 1958.

   As Technician- manager of the New York Artificial Breeder co-op, Lawrence served dairy farms all over Saint Lawrence county. The co-op merged with Eastern Artificial Insemination co-op, and he continued his career for 24 years, receiving several awards for successful breeding programs.  He was often found in local barns, milking the cows when the farmer was ill and help was needed.  Mr. Aldous felt community service was important and was actively involved in Boy Scouts as an assistant leader. He cared deeply for children and drove school bus at Canton Central school for 20 years.  He was involved with Jaycee's, a member of the Sylvan Falls hunting club for 40 years, and was the noted Brick Chapel Church chicken barbecue grill master.  He also served as the Treasurer of Brick Chapel Church for 64 years until his death.  Lawrence continued to serve the Town of Canton as an elected councilman for 10 years and then as highway superintendent for 14 years until his retirement in 1993.

He was instrumental in raising funds for the new Canton fire station on Riverside Drive, as well as assisting with the construction of the Partridge Run golf course.

Larry had always spoken of a trip to Alaska and checked that off his bucket list the summer of 1995. He was the happiest being outside cutting wood, and spending time with his family. He will be remembered for his generosity, common sense and kindness.

Calling hours wil be at Lawrence Funeral Home on Monday, June 17 from 2-4 & 6-8 PM, and a memorial service will be held later this summer at the convenience of the family.  In lieu of flowers, please consider sending  donations to Brick Chapel Church or the Canton Fire Department.
